Some of our ever ready RFS Brigade

Did you miss Get Ready Weekend at the local Fire Brigade? Have you prepared your home? Have you updated your bushfire survival plan?

It is that time of the year when we should all be preparing our homes for the summer ahead. And summer seems to be starting earlier every year.

Remember mid October 2013 when those disastrous fires ravaged the Blue Mountains as well as areas much closer to home including the upper Karuah River, Bulahdelah and a large swathe of land from Heatherbrae to Medowie?  It is already mid-September. The anniversary of those fires is just one month away. We need to get ready now.

The RFS reminds us that little things we do now could make a big difference during a bush fire.

Simply by trimming overhanging trees and shrubs, keeping your grass mowed, removing flammable material, clearing up fallen debris and leaves and preparing hoses to reach around your home you can help prevent burning embers from destroying your home.

Top five actions

Don't know where to start? You can:

  1. TRIM overhanging trees and shrubs.
  2. MOW your lawn and remove all the cut grass.
  3. REMOVE material that can burn around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, outdoor furniture).
  4. CLEAR and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.
  5. PREPARE a hose or hoses that can stretch all around the house.

And of course have an up-to-date Busfire Survival Plan!
