Rate Rise Rejected - for 2017-18

MidCoast Council's plans for a Special Rate Variation (SRV)  to apply for four years commencing in 2017-18 have been blocked.  An edict from the Office of Local Government in late 2016 expressly ruled out consideration of SRVs for any newly merged council - at least for the next financial year. The basic rate increase (expected to be 2.5%) will still apply.

This decision frustrates MidCoast's hopes to use the SRV to fund a shortfall in funding for Council’s road renewal program and to start the process of reducing a significant backlog of roadworks. Interim General Manager, Glenn Handford, said Council will be looking for other funding opportunities for these works.
