Report on Heros Beach Survey

This web site hosted a survey on behalf of Great Lakes Council which is developing a long term plan for Heros Beach.  The survey looked at: what we thought was special about Heros Beach; how we use the reserve now; and what we would like to see at Heros Beach in the future.

By the time it closed on 13 February, 48 survey forms had been completed representing the views of 63 Cove people.  The following summary gives a brief overview of the outcomes.

The enthusiastic responses to the first question "Tell us what you think is special?" showed that Heros Beach is clearly a resource which is highly valued by members of the Cove community.

The second question dealt with how we use Heros Beach now. Most respondents use the beach for swimming (84%) and children's play (54%).  “Other uses” identified (not included on the original list) include walking, fishing, and just enjoying the environment.

When it came to the question of "What would you like to see at Heros Beach?", picnic tables (87%) and bbq facilities (75%) were quite popular requests overall.

Forty of the people contributing to survey responses came from the eastern part of the Cove (Barromee Pt, Cove Bvd, Point Cct, Eastslope Way, Merriwa Bvd) and the remaining 23 from the western part of the Cove (i.e. closer to Heros Beach: viz. Promontory Way and the western portion of The Esplanade). As might be expected there were very marked differences in responses to some items between these two groups particularly with regard to public toilet (83% vs 30%), dinghy racks (83% vs 48%) and children's play facilities (80% vs 48%).

Two issues in particular appeared a number of times on the present survey in open responses that had not been included amongst the alternatives offered to respondents. These were  “dogs” (both for and against) and “boat ramp”.

Some of the individual survey responses contained excellent suggestions which could be considered further by Council.

A big thank you to all those who responded. Everybody's responses to the survey were packaged up and sent to Council after the survey closed.

We can now look forward to seeing what Council makes of our varied views when they develop a draft plan for further discussion and community input.
