Glenn Handford, only recently confirmed as MidCoast Council's General Manager, tendered his resignation at yesterday's Council Meeting (20 December).  Glenn Handford is apparently leaving for a position in the private sector. Rumours have been in existence for at least six months that Mr Handford would not remain with the new Council for long following the completion of the merger process and the election of the new Council. Some of those persistent rumours had even named the company that he was expected to join.

November has certainly been a big month for sales of Old Masters. A Da Vinci painting sold at auction in New York for a mind-boggling $A591million. Closer to home, did you see that our own MidCoast Council has been off on its own Old Masters buying spree as well?

This is not a story about the army take-over of our peninsular. Those events are however mentioned in the book about our village – which is of course a great gift option for family and friends! Instead, this is a story about the past efforts of the local community to change the name of our village.

The two neighbouring villages to our east, Bundabah and Pindimar, bear names of Aboriginal origin. In 1983, the North Arm Cove community felt that our village too should be known by the Aboriginal name for the area: “Baromee”. But as...

You may not need a microscope but a magnifying glass is beneficial when searching for mentions of North Arm Cove in the Capital Works proposal presented to this week's Council Meeting.

In the report for September-November 2017, we find that construction and sealing of The Esplanade (East) is scheduled to occur this November. This project was allocated Federal "Roads to Recovery" funding back in 2014.

Len Roberts

Informal did extremely well in Saturday's Council Elections for MidCoast. With around 12.5% of the total votes cast on the day, it has beaten every group apart from Country Labor! Is this a reflection on the massive voting paper, a lack of knowledge of the candidates or perhaps even a lack of interest and disconnection from the process? (By comparison, in the 2012 Council elections informal was only 6.75% in Great Lakes, 3.2% in Gloucester and 10% in Taree.)

While counting is still under way, it is clear already that former Great Lakes Deputy Mayor Len Roberts has succeeded...

If you enjoy filling out a Senate ballot paper, you will certainly be happy with next Saturday's election. For the eleven positions to be filled on new MidCoast Council we have to choose from 69 candidates. There are eleven groups of candidates (groups A-K) with five of the candidates ungrouped. Two groups are officially nominated by political parties but a number of other candidates have political affiliations which are shown below in parentheses.

How do we make sense of all that? Not an easy task - but the table of candidates below may assist with its links to information...

Highly! Rates are up.

At the Extraordinary Meeting held on 21 July, Council approved the rate levels for the 2017-18 year. IPART, having considered MidCoasts application for increases, agreed to increases of 10% for this current financial year and 5% for the following two years. This year's approved increase was one percent less than Council requested because the "rate peg" had been dropped from 2.5% to 1.5%.

What does this mean for the 401 North Arm Cove urban (village) properties?
Council expects to collect $557,354 in rates from our village area. To do this it...

This is your chance to "have your say" on the branding of the amalgamated MidCoast Council. You can watch the video and then answer the survey by accessing this webpage: http://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Have-Your-Say/What-is-MidCoast-2

Hear why these logos and the choice of colour-palette represent the lakes, the mountains and the Manning valley. Do either of these options work for you?
