Koala at North Arm Cove

I was taking an afternoon walk along Eastslopes Way last January when a couple of young women asked whether I had seen any koalas. They were hoping for a koala sighting on their walk. It is hard to spot a koala in a treetop even when you know it is there, and the young women did not seem to realise that their chances of just randomly spotting a koala were slim.

The Port Stephens -Great Lakes Marine Park was declared in December 2005. It covers an area of 98,000 hectares and includes all estuarine waters of Port Stephens and the Karuah River, the Myall River, Myall and Smiths Lakes and all the other creeks and tributaries to the limit of their tidal influence. It extends approximately 3 nautical miles offshore. The waters of North Arm Cove are within the Marine Park.

The Oyster Industry Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy (OISAS) was gazetted in December, 2006. This document can be viewed on the NSW Department of Primary Industries website. It recommended that a number of leases in North Arm Cove be designated “priority leases”. This designation provides a streamlined approvals process for oyster farm proposals that lie within these areas. It also provides a framework to protect the environment of these areas.

Food Authority Water Sampling Locations

The NSW Food Authority has tested the water quality in North Arm Cove since 2003. When these results are compared to local rainfall data, an estimate can be made as to whether the water is safe for recreational activities.
