Hopefully the first of a regular occurrence, the 26th October Sausage Sizzle organised by the Resident's Association proved to be a great success.

Guest speaker at the meeting was Kellie McLeod from Great Lakes Rural Fire Service Control at Tuncurry. She urged people to complete the Bushfire Survival Plan booklet that had been recently delivered to all households in the village. Residents need to complete both the “going early” and “staying to defend” plans as leaving may not be an option in the event of the road being cut very quickly. Emergency notices are broadcast by landline phones, mobiles, ABC Radio and ABC television. Kellie will be conducting a doorknock in a couple of weeks to help people to fill out their...

There are some blocks of land in or near the Village precinct which have become badly overgrown and so are a risk to adjacent properties. At today's NACRA meeting there was a question asked about how such bush fire hazards can be reported to the RFS so that appropriate action can be taken to ensure that the hazard is removed.

RFS now provide an on-line form where these concerns can be reported. Scroll towards the bottom of the page to see the information that is required.

After two years of record rains, this summer is forecast to be hot and dry. We all need to be well prepared for the possibility of bushfires. Guests from RFS:FireWise will address the NACRA meeting and answer your questions.

Amongst other items on the agenda: Should we apply for a Community Partnership Grant? Applications close 30 October. We need your input.

A public boat ramp continues to be a high priority issue for the local community and therefore for NACRA - despite some recent rumours to the contrary! This is a potted history of events to date (in reverse chronological order - latest events on top). Comments on the boat ramp issue are invited. Add your comment to the discussion below.

The new NACRA committeeschFri, 17/08/2012 - 3:02pm

Hi everyone.
My name is Stephanie Hunter and I have just been elected President of the North Arm Cove Residents Association. Some of you may remember me from the time I served as the Association's Secretary, some may know me as the Secretary of the NAC Fire Brigade, and yet others as the Publicity Officer for the Myall University of the Third Age.

We have a full committee of seven, with four of the previous year's committee staying on to give continuity and assistance to the new members.

However to achieve outcomes for the community often requires...

Our new rates assessment notice from the Council was a surprise. Our rate increase was 10.2% and exceeded the IPART (Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal) approved limit of 8.4%. I received a letter of explanation from Lee Howard which you can read by clicking on the document link at the bottom of this article.

I responded by email to Lee with the following more specific question:

Our rates have gone up by 10.2% which is more than the % allowable under IPART. However, our property value has declined by a full 18.3%. Am I correct in assuming...

Proposed zoning of Cove waters

Q. What is this all about and how does it affect me?

A. The GLC tells us that every ratepayer in the shire is affected by these draft plans. But only you can decide the effects for yourself.

To quote from the GLC's website:

"Great Lakes Council has developed two new Council-wide planning documents to guide development throughout the Great Lakes and will undertake extensive community consultation during a public exhibition period from Thursday 14 June until Friday 24 August 2012.

Draft Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan 2012 (Draft LEP 2012) and Draft...

Your village needs you!

Over the years the village has benefited enormously from the efforts of many volunteers who have generously given their time to serve the interests of our community.

The focus of their work has been to protect the Cove's unique environment, to raise funds for projects which improve our lives and to provide a medium for us to lobby local and state governments for better services. As a consequence we have been granted hundreds of thousands of dollars for various capital projects. We have had significant input into local government decision making and, most importantly, everyone knows we count....
