FIRST CROPS FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN

Hard at work on the garden

Shading the young plants

The garden group are delighted with their first planting of potatoes, pumpkin, zucchini, salad greens, garlic chives, celery, spring onions, peas, beans and cucumber.

After a month of hard work making compost and preparing the beds, the seedlings are shooting up and have managed to survive a couple of very hot days.  The beds are quite exposed, so shade cloth has now been erected to protect the young shoots during the hottest part of the day.

As this project was created for the benefit all Cove residents, the group are keen to share the garden with other community members and there are a number of ways to get involved.

You can join the garden network and work in the beds, or if you would prefer to do your planting at home, come along and check out the permaculture techniques used in the tanks and mini wiki beds, as these are suitable for home use.  Maybe you have some ideas of your own for planting at the garden, like growing in a hay bale.  Your input would be most welcome.

    "HAY BALE" PLANTER

All you need to do is pop in on a Wednesday morning 8 am – 10 am to check out the progress of the current crop of veggies and herbs and find out more about the community garden network and how you can become involved.  Pots of edible greens will also be available for sale on Wednesdays – perfect for summer salads.

If you are unable to become an active member and work in the garden, then maybe you could contribute by donating unwanted gardening implements or compost material.  Or if you are interested in garden produce only, a subscription fee can be arranged.

This month donations were received from:

  • Adriennne Francis and her family – seedlings.
  • Ira Knight - a wheelbarrow and mulching fork (both in high demand).
  • Shane Martin – garden implements.

Thank you all for your support.

A notice board to chart the progress of the garden is planned, so if anyone has a corkboard or some cork tiles they no longer require, we would welcome a donation.  You will be rewarded with a pot of edible greens.

General meetings will be held on the first Saturday of the month.  Next  meeting is 10am-noon on Saturday 6 November 2012 at the garden, when elections for office bearers will be held.  You can download a nomination form from this website or contact Maria or Kerryan on the number below.
