FERAL DEER MANAGEMENT

Feral deer

We occasionally see feral deer in our vicinity (and some unfortunate drivers, have encountered a vehicle collision). There was (not sure if there still is) a deer herd along the Myall Way into Tea Gardens and perhaps some of these have absconded and become feral.  I have certainly seen a couple along the Gooreengi Road over the last eight years.

Urban Deer Management Australia offer a unique service, based in Wootton, with 24/7 coverage.  Kai and Kristy offered this background information:

“Feral deer have been steadily spreading northwards from the original "escapes" in Raymond Terrace and Seaham.  Luckily for the residents of North Arm Cove (NAC), they are only a relatively small breed "Fallow". From Wootton all the way to Port, there is a much larger breed "Rusa" that we have been doing a large amount of work with farmers to manage.

They are coming into the dangerous period within the next week or two and outweigh the little fallow by 60 -70kg on average, which is a huge issue for commuters and farmers alike due to the damage they do to fences, livestock and vehicles.

There are six different breeds in Australia.

For reference, there are four breeds listed below in order of size and weight that you would be most likely to see in this area of NSW:

1. Fallow (males up to 90kg - females up to 70kg) mating season mid-March through mid-April).

2. Rusa (males up to150kg - females up to 110kg) mating period Mid-June through Mid-August).

3. Red (males up to 220kg – females up to 90kg) mating from beginning to end of April.

4. Sambar (males up to 300kg - females up to 230kg) mating can be year-round but mostly September to October).

Generally, you will only see the first breed listed (Fallow) around your area, although we are aware that Rusa are moving slowly south as well.  We would expect that it would be years before you see them at NAC.

No website or email currently available….. we have not had time to make that happen as yet although we will in the near future (we have up until this point worked via word of mouth and referral so there's been no need).

We can certainly provide written references from current and past customers who have and continue to use our services, also provide proof of insurance and discuss in person plans for management and how we achieve the desired outcome to fit in with the property owner prior to any actual work being undertaken.

We will take calls and attend at any time, especially at this time of year as we are about to go into the ‘Rusa’ deer roar (mating period).

You are welcome to call us with any questions”.
