On the Old AACo Road

A walk along the recently heritage listed old Australian Agricultural Company road from Karuah to Tahlee

The 13th April 2014 will see the fourth Walk to Karuah from Tahlee on the northern shore of Port Stephens.

The Old AACo Road dates back to 1826 when convicts used the track to walk to work on the first AACo Farm. Since then it has been a bush track, the main road between Karuah and Tahlee and now, once again, a bush track.

The old road traverses the north shore of Port Stephens through magnificent scenery and with water views most of the way.

The reason it is little used is that half way along, there is a creek that was once crossed by a convict built bridge which was destroyed in the late 1950s. So, annually, Karuah Progress Association organizes an oyster barge to ferry walkers over the creek to allow them to make the complete walk.

This year the event will be held on Sunday 13th April There will be a charge of $25 to cover the cost of a light lunch before leaving, the ferry crossing, the guided walk, devonshire tea and a guided tour at historic Tahlee House plus the bus trip back to Karuah by the main road. Participants will receive this year's commemorative booklet containing information about the walk.

The 5 kilometre walk starts at 12.00pm at Longworth Park, Karuah and the event will take roughly three hours. For more information, go to http://aacoroad.com or www.karuah.net or email:   alcedo3@bigpond.com  or phone 0249975579. Bookings may also be made at The Karuah Centre or Karuah RSL.
