Nature in the Balance

NSW Planning Laws fail to deliver. Community rights & environmental protection now undermined.

The NSW Planning Minister Brad Hazzard, on Tuesday 22nd October, introduced his controversial Planning Bill 2013 to the NSW Parliament. Following two years of preparation and state-wide opposition, this Bill still undermines community rights and environmental protection by subordinating the public interest to the demands of powerful vested interests in this state. Now to be debated in the Parliament, this Bill also fails to deliver a fair and sustainable planning system for NSW. It removes all reference to Ecologically Sustainable Development principles and allows the fast-tracking of significant developments without community consultation.

Cessnock City Councillor James Ryan, a long-standing Lower Hunter community leader, has an intriguing story and message exposing adverse affects for community rights and for natural environments across NSW.
