Clean Up Australia Day has always been enthusiastically attended in North Arm Cove - and it's not hard to understand why that would be so. There's so much to love about our local environment, the bushland, the quiet foreshore bays and wetlands.. and yet unfortunately, our beautiful surrounds all too often attract rubbish dumping and careless littering.
From mountains of tyres to burn out cars, tin and metal sheets, old mattresses, white goods and appliances, furniture, bricks, tiles, green waste and even your odd industrial dump of things such as electrical wiring (pictured below) or asbestos.
This year, like all others, was a wonderful day of the community getting out there together and accomplishing something quite remarkable in just a few short hours.
There were around twenty helping out on the Sunday (and a few others on Saturday!), which kicked off at 8am at the Community Hall. Shortly after arrival, teams split off on various tasks - some walking the access roads into the village, others heading off to pre-located dump sites with trailers and others still checking foreshore parkland and bay areas.
By 10.30am, the pile of rubbish that had amounted behind the Community Hall had grown to an immense size.
Over the coming week or so, Mid Coast Council will arrange disposal of the pile - a service we are most appreciative of.
A big shout to Scott and Wendy for their stellar debut effort in attacking the seriously large dumps of white goods and furniture on the old Pacific Highway easement road to the west of Goorgeengi Road. And how could we not mention Bill and Patty - an ever-present and unstoppable force when it comes to locating and extracting large volumes of furniture, trash and tyres from the bush.
All in all, the area around North Arm Cove is looking pretty tidy and today's Clean Up Australia efforts were a big contribution. Thank you to all the volunteers for turning up this weekend and really getting stuck into it. Our beloved Cove has scrubbed up nicely!
And a final note of thanks to the North Arm Cove community from Jenny Geddes, CEO of Clean Up Australia "Incredible effort! Please pass on our thanks to all that got involved. What a haul!".
