The Aussie Bird Count for 2025 starts on Monday, 20 October and runs for a week. This is Australia's biggest citizen science event.
Thousands of Aussies will take just 20 minutes to count the birds around them. From backyards, balconies, parks, sporting fields, wherever they are. All you have to do is download the free app and register. It does not matter if you are not an expert. The app helps you identify the birds by colour, shape, size and location. If I had been counting at North Arm Cove today at lunchtime, I would have noted over 30 ducks, a pair of lapwings, 6 seagulls, a butcher bird, a magpie feeding two chicks, 7 long billed shore birds which I didn't identify, and a raven. I could also hear the koel that is making a lot of noise at the moment and rainbow lorikeets.
