Native Rats and Mice

By mpickles, 29 July, 2013

Recently a few residents have been relating thier issue with some of the native wildlife entering thier house particularly mice.

How do you tell a native from the imported variety?

The best information I could find is at the Museum of Victoria website http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/infosheets/introduced-rodents/

The ears may be the best way to quickly identify if your intruder is native or not.  The introduced species have more pointed ears than the natives. Also the native species are unlikely to nest in your house.

For inspiration you could watch the video Australian Rats and Mice - For Fred they're beautiful

So what can we do to ensure that we do not wipe out the native species?

If you have  cat or a dog make sure it is locked up at night.

Restrict the entry of the natives by blocking up holes in your house and keeping doors closed.

If you must bait - make sure that you are only baiting the introduced variety and only use Racumin Baits which are not as damaging to other wildlife which may eat a poisoned animal.

Find out as much as you can about the habits of the animals around you such as have the neighbours seen native mice and rats about? Is there something attracting the introduced mice and rats to your house such as chooks or storage?
