Oysterman ‘The World’s Biggest Oyster Farm’ by John Clarke

“Oysterman” is a history of oyster growing in NSW with a focus on Port Stephens and the families that contributed to the industry.

Oyster farming started in Port Stephens in the late 19th century and continues to the present time. The author, John “Stinker” Clarke, has interviewed the descendants of many of the original oyster farming families. He describes the difficulties that confronted the pioneering families, the development of the industry and the devastating impact of the Pacific Oyster infestation in the 1980’s. Over half the book is devoted to biographies of the various pioneering families.

There are many historical photographs including a couple of colour photographs of oyster farms in North Arm Cove. The book is easy to read and full of interesting information and stories. It can be purchased from local newsagents and book sellers. Check out John’s website for further details or to order online-www.stinker.com.au
