GYRO! So when did you last play pickleball?

If you haven't yet, maybe you are missing out on what has been described as the fastest growing sport in the US. And there are already some 1500 players in Australia.

Now you can join the crowd.  Pickleball is a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis and it has come to North Arm Cove! Four players, a low net and a low-compression ball.

Pickleball is one of the games we learn in the Get Your Racquet On! program.

Our North Arm Cove host team of nine club members met at the court on Tuesday in preparation for GYRO!

Tennis Australia has provided us with a very impressive $3000 kit which includes racquets, nets and balls especially designed for use in this program.

The national GYRO! promotion starts next week with the start of the Australian Open. Over 1000 clubs across the country are involved but North Arm Cove Tennis Club is probably the first off the line. We chose to go early because we wanted to give our 'inflated' Christmas population the chance to be involved.

We were joined by Kathy Barber, the Central NSW Club Development Officer and she took  us through the process of warm up sessions and games, including pickleball.

I think it's fair to say that several of us were sceptical before Tuesday's session.  It looked: too easy, too difficult, too slow, too fast - depending on the (varied) skills of our little group. But it turned out very well. Everyone agreed afterwards that it was good fun and active enough to be worth while.

We are now taking bookings for the next two GYRO! sessions:

  • Friday January 24th at 5:00 pm
  • Saturday January 25th at 8:30 am

So, if you are feeling a little 'inflated' - with turkey and Christmas pudding - please come and join us to work some of it off.

Bookings on 0427 276 718 or Or you can ring me, Tony, on 0402 990 999 if you want to check out what it's about.
