Saturday saw the very successful introduction of Pickleball to the village. Around 18 curious locals turned up to the tennis court to take instruction from Judy Montgomery from Myall Park Tennis Club in this new and very popular sport.
Pickleball is a big deal in the US and Australia. The number of people playing pickleball is actually surpassing the numbers playing tennis in the US, and its popularity is growing steadily. It's a hit across all age groups, and interestingly, it has a higher participation rate among women compared to tennis.
The game is played by two or four players on a court approximately half the size of a tennis court. Players use large table tennis-like bats (called paddles) and a light aerated low-bouncing plastic ball.
Anyone can play this game. You will see players out on the court from 5 years old to 90+ years old. Compared to other sports, there is a low chance of injury, a low cost for entry, and it is not too physically demanding.
We thank Susan Carter for organising this session and Judy for her time. I think itβs safe to say, if interest is maintained, our tennis club will consider organising regular Pickleball sessions on our court in the future.
