Let's celebrate 25 years of effort

By sirius, 20 February, 2015

Sunday March 1st, 8am

What better way to celebrate the 25th Clean Up Australia Day than to have a record turn-out of willing Cove volunteers to assist our local coordinator, Tony Hann. Sign-on is at the Hall at 8am on Sunday 1st March. Remember to bring your hat and fly spray! Rubbish collection bags will be provided.

The inspiration for Clean Up Australia Day came from passionate yachtie, Ian Kiernan, who was horrified at the amount of rubbish he encountered in the world's oceans. From the beginning this initiative was a great success. Over the past 25 years, Australians have contributed more than 27 million volunteer hours and collected over 288,650 tonnes of rubbish! The idea has since been adopted across the world. It has also been an annual event in the Cove now for many years.

Of course, keeping the Cove clean is not just a one-day-a-year event. Even if you can't help on March 1, you can still do your bit throughout the year. And if you happen to see people dumping rubbish in the Cove, let Council know. Last year Council did impose a significant fine on one dumper.

Thanks Doug for your comments of support. Hopefully we will be cyclone free and in the sun again on Sunday. I personally have gained a lot from organising this activity over the last five years. It is always very heartening to see so many turn out and give up their time to keep our village clean. Meanwhile I am hoping that a new co-ordinator might step forward for next years clean-up. A simple but very rewarding task. Tony H
