Invitation

6 September, Nelson Bay

We have heaps of fancy communications technology and a range of social media apps at our finger tips - but how often do we really connect  with those we care about: our family, our friends and neighbours?

September 8 is R U OK Day. Asking the simple question "Are you okay?" and then  taking time to listen to the answer is a great place to start. It can help those who may be struggling with life, to feel connected.

In the lead up to R U OK Day, our State MP, Kate Washington is hosting a public forum on Mental Health - from 5.45pm on Tuesday 6 September at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers.

NSW Mental Health Commissioner, John Feneley, and Rachel Green from the Black Dog Institute will be amongst the speakers. The full details of this event are provided in the attachment below.

In each year, one in five Australians experience a mental illness! One in twenty-five experience a major depressive episode! Unfortunately surveys have shown  that only around 35% of those who needed help, utilised a health service. With these statistics, it is very likely that someone you know is suffering mental health issues.

"This forum" Kate says "will be an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues within our community".
