It is still Volunteers Week. In my article on volunteers, I forgot one of our most important volunteers, the editor of Cove News, Loal Conroy.

Last year, Loal took on the task of providing us with the Cove News. I know from many discussions with the previous editor, Maureen Kelly, that this can be a big job. Many of us seniors prefer the written word in hard copy, so a big thank you to Loal and all the volunteers who help her. Your hard work is much appreciated.

At the last NACCAi meeting Councillor Len Roberts was asked about rates.

MidCoast Council is currently reviewing all rates in a process called rates harmonisation. The amalgamation of three councils has led to a complicated rating system. This has been reviewed and a single rating system will replace the old system in July 2021. According to Council, there will be no changes or even a decrease for 80% of landowners.

There is more information plus a rates calculator on Council’s website. Go to

We used the calculator for our property as well as the...

Traffic advice sign

There are several groups of residents who regularly cycle, jog or walk along the bitumen roads between the village and the highway. Some have had near misses with vehicles speeding along the roads. The problem is particularly noticeable in the early mornings when tradesmen are coming to work in the village.

Peter C has been lobbying the various government authorities to get some signage regarding the distance required when passing cyclists on the road. He has had one short term success. Midcoast Council has put up an electronic sign on a trailer close to the entry to the Cove....

I wrote some notes on land valuation in an article on this site in June last year - .

At that time, the Valuer General was busy concluding the once-every-three-year task of revaluing North Arm Cove properties. The result was a bit of a shock in July when we received a letter form the Valuer General’s office to say that our assessed value was $114,000 higher than in had been at the last valuation in 2017.
