The owner of the iconic Fame Cove/North Arm Cove waterfront site in Port Stephens will front the Land and Environment Court again next Friday (24 March) to face continuing charges of causing serious environmental damage and carrying out unauthorised work.

The court appearance follows a previous court decision imposing a four month stop work order on the site. This was in response to investigations by Mid Coast Council that revealed prolific devastation due to work being carried out beyond development consent, without permit or consultation.

Coeliac AwarenessdougkFri, 17/03/2017 - 6:43pm

It seems every day of the year and every week has been allocated one or more names. This week has been designated as Coeliac Awareness Week . As a Coeliac diagnosed somewhat late in life, I do feel I should do my bit to make people aware of the issues. The attached poster highlights how symptoms of Coeliac Disease can be very diverse, differing from one individual to another. Some people do not get the abdominal symptoms at all. In children undiagnosed Coeliac Disease may be the cause of otherwise unexplained behavioural or learning problems.

Drenched, dripping and bedraggled they may have become but an enthusiastic band of Clean Up Australia volunteers braved some persistent Sunday showers to bag an abundance of bottles, cans and vast range of other miscellaneous litter from roadways and verges around the Cove.

MidCoast Council have advised that the next community update session to be held at Tea Gardens Baptist Church Hall will be on Tuesday 7 March 6pm. The session will include important news on Council's upcoming September elections, asset management, financial position and merger progress.

These meetings are also a great opportunity to find out about key Council issues.  There'll be an opportunity to ask questions.

Interim General Manager, Glenn Handford and Directors Lisa Schiff, Steve Embry, Paul De Szell and Ron Hartley will host the meetings.

The Loosely Woven concert at the Community Hall on Saturday 18 February attracted a full house. In fact, some eager concert goers who rang to book in the final days before the event had to be knocked back. YESS organiser Joan Williams was sad to have to turn people away, but the committee is already working on getting Loosely Woven back in the near future.

And what a concert it was - everything from classical to pop to rock. The audience was encouraged to sing along and joined in with gusto. Meanwhile...

North Arm Cove Boating Development Plan
A response to a letter from property owners

These comments are in response to a letter written by two long-term Cove property owners about the Boating Now's feasibility study into a boat ramp and jetty in North Arm Cove.

The letter included a report on the suitability of Medina Bay and was addressed to Kate Washington with, I believe, copies to the MidCoast Council. It now appears that the letter is in open circulation in our community but without the report.

When Cove residents Joan and Col Williams saw Loosely Woven perform at Wallarobba in August last year, they just knew they had to book them for North Arm Cove. So Joan and the YESS committee got together and approached Loosely Woven with some tentative dates, finally settling on Saturday, 18 February.

This is your chance to see a unique group of performers consisting of approximately 20 singers and instrumentalists. Presented in a cabaret style, the music is a mix of folk, classical, comedy, pop, blues, ethnic and country, plus a bit of drama...

At an extraordinary meeting of MidCoast Council held on 21 December 2016 it was resolved that MidCoast County Council (which trades as MidCoast Water) should be dissolved and merged as a separate business unit within MidCoast Council. This resolution is a recommendation to the Minister for Local Government.

MidCoast Council's plans for a Special Rate Variation (SRV)  to apply for four years commencing in 2017-18 have been blocked.  An edict from the Office of Local Government in late 2016 expressly ruled out consideration of SRVs for any newly merged council - at least for the next financial year. The basic rate increase (expected to be 2.5%) will still apply.
